System Manager (Unix)
A bit about the role
Job Summary
Avaloq is seeking a Senior Unix Engineer to design, implement, and operate secure, scalable, and highly available Unix/Linux infrastructure across on-premises and cloud environments.
The ideal candidate will possess strong expertise in enterprise Linux systems, cloud infrastructure, automation, and operational support. You will play a key role in ensuring the reliability, performance, and security of platform services supporting mission-critical banking applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain enterprise Unix/Linux infrastructure across data center and cloud environments
- Own and manage Linux-based environments across Dev, Test, and Production with focus on availability and reliability
- Install, configure, patch, and upgrade Linux systems in line with operational and security standards
- Monitor system performance, health, and capacity, ensuring proactive optimization
- Manage system resources including CPU, memory, storage, file systems, and processes
- Troubleshoot complex system issues and lead incident resolution, including root cause analysis (RCA)
- Implement and maintain system security controls, access management, and hardening practices
- Support high availability, disaster recovery, and system resilience strategies
- Collaborate with database, network, cloud, and application teams for integrated service delivery
- Maintain system documentation, standards, and operational procedures
- Drive automation-first approach using scripting and Infrastructure-as-Code tools (Shell, Python, Ansible, Terraform)
- Support compliance, audit, and regulatory requirements in banking environments
A bit about you
Required Skills & Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in Unix/Linux system administration (RHEL, Oracle Linux, or equivalent)
- Strong hands-on experience with Linux system administration, configuration, and troubleshooting
- Good understanding of OS internals (processes, memory, file systems, networking basics)
- Experience with system performance tuning, monitoring, and capacity management
- Strong experience with patching, upgrades, and lifecycle management
- Experience working in hybrid environments (on-premises and cloud)
- Strong scripting skills (Shell, Bash ,Go, Ansible, YAML, Terraform)
- Experience with automation tools (Ansible or similar)
- Solid understanding of system security, access management, and OS hardening
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with cloud platforms (OCI / AWS) and Linux-based cloud workloads
- Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code tools (Terraform)
- Familiarity with container platforms (Docker, Kubernetes) is a plus
- Exposure to Avaloq platform or willingness to learn Avaloq-specific tooling and frameworks
- Knowledge of monitoring and observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, etc.)
- Experience in banking, fintech, or regulated environments
- Certifications such as RHCSA / RHCE or equivalent
